Sewing Indigo Tilly and the Buttons dress FIRST TIME!

This is the first time I've ever made anything for myself to wear, I've only made clothes for Vienna before now so this was a new venture for me!

I've always wanted to try a Tilly and the Buttons pattern as I've heard they are easy to follow and they are also lovely garments, so when the new Indigo pattern came out I knew I had to get my hands on it.

It didn't take me long to choose the fabric I wanted to use as I prefer the feel of viscose, stretchy fabric and love a comfy material, judging by the clothes I already own! I also love dark colours and bold prints, so the daisy was perfect! (It was also super cheap off eBay so.. bonus!)

I was going to make the indigo top but seen as I was able to get so much fabric, I decided to go for the dress instead.



Once I decided what size to make, cutting out seemed a bit daunting. the different marks on the pattern looked scary at first, but starting with the biggest pattern piece you soon get the hang on following the correct line!


I chose a bigger size than I am which I actually didn't need to do because of the loose fitting style of the dress, so next time I make it I will definitely go down a size or even 2. I might try to put some elastic around the waistband of this dress to make it slightly more shaped as it is a little bit too big. 


The instructions were easy to follow, as expected! Luckily the fabric I was working with is quite forgiving.. the pattern is so busy you can't notice any wonky sewing lines or mistakes so I wasn't so worried if it wasn't perfect. I knew that I would make this again so its all practice. Making this dress also taught me some basics of dressmaking so, as they say, practice makes perfect!



One thing that stood out to me as a learning curve is that STRETCHY FBRIC IS HARD TO WORK WITH...
I've been told this before but was never really phased by it, but wow was it frustrating! Pinning and cutting was the main hurdle. You've flattened it out 27483 times, cut perfectly, then suddenly its out of shape or cut too small! I think next time I do this, I will spend much longer correctly the cutting because this became a problem when it came to sewing together. I had to make some cutting adjustments along the way which isn't ideal! But as I said previously, the fabric is very forgiving...



I'll be making the dress again soon and I plan to make it more of a maxi or midaxi dress for winter. I'll have a go at making a top too at a tunic length. The flounce sleeves are just amazing so I'd love to have a few pieces made like this to choose from in my wardrobe. The style is so flattering and girly which is a nice change to my oversized t-shirts and hoodies that I wear at the moment! Watch this space...

Busy Bee Sewing Room Set

Welcome to my Blog!

So this is the first time I'm writing a blog, which seems strange because everyone and their dog has a blog these days, but here we go...  I live in London with my boyfriend Gildas (Gilly) and our beautiful daughter Vienna-Rae. I work as part-time as a Visual Merchandiser for a company called Superdry, which is actually where I met Gilly about 5  years ago! (aww) The reason why I wanted to start this blog was to document and chat about my experience whilst learning to sew. My mum is the VERY  talented Debbie Shore, sewing author/blogger/youtuber/presenter extraordinaire, so you can see where I get my inspiration from! Now that I have a little girl, I want to be able to make her everything! This might just be a fantasy  of mine... or I might end up being able to make her gorgeous clothes, we shall see!!
